Cash and care: emerging issues in promoting choice, control and self-directed
support
Hear Melanie Henwood from the UK
on the empowerment agenda in Britain.
"The idea of empowering service
users through a direct alocation of money, rather than through the provision of
a direct service, is being hailed in England as the next big idea in social care
and beyond, as evidenced by the increased use of Direct Payments, the expansion
of 'In Control', and the piloting of individual budgets".

Federal electorate Assemblies launched
The Centre for Civil Society has launched its new
structure for extending its empowerment agenda throughout Australia.
The structure is based on assemblies of
participants organised in each federal electorate. There are 150 federal
electorates in the Commonwealth.
The Centre's Director, Vern Hughes, said this
structure would make the Centre for Civil Society different from every other
think tank in the country. "We are about influencing elite opinion by building
involvement and activity at local grass-roots levels", said Vern.
