LEFT AND RIGHT?

"The Left and Right have been as bad as each other. The Left has allowed its distrust of markets and endless faith in government to obscure the importance of civil society. The Right has been so focused on replacing the state with markets that it has forgotten how to cultivate a trusting society.

This is the politics of the absurd. The Left identifies with the good society but rarely talks about the mutualism and trust between people. The Right recognises the importance of moral obligation but gives the impression of trusting market transactions more than civil society.

Few things seem to happen anymore without a government law or market transaction to guide them. This is how record levels of GDP in Australia now sit alongside record levels of crime, social stress and family  breakdown. The political balance needs to swing back towards civil society.

This task, in fact, requires a new type of politics."

Mark Latham, Mutualism: A Third Way for Australia," 1999.

We hope you will join us and become involved in empowering Australian consumers, families and communities. Fill in the online form on this page to register your participation in the Centre's work.

The focus of our work is the federal electorate, of which there are 150 around Australia. Each has about 150,000 people, and 100,000 voters. We bring people together in each federal electorate to work locally to influence policy and opinion through local initiatives, events, campaigns and local media activities.

The Centre has six major projects.

Self-Directed Services and Personal Budgets

You can become involved in the development of self-directed services and personal budgets in aged care, chronic and mental illness, disability, special education and vocational training, and other areas of intensive personal and social support for individuals and families.

Community Building

You can participate in the Community Building Network. It's focus is on a wide range of community building efforts, including both practical initiatives and campaigns to influence policy. It is also developing voice and representation for volunteers, and voluntary community organisations, and facilitating local governance innovations and local government reform.

Parents, Families and Carers

You can participate in this project which aims to develop the organisational voice and capacity of parents and families, with a focus on empowerment through practical innovations and through campaigns to influence policy.

Transforming Our Schools

You can become involved in Transforming Our Schools, which aims to break the stalemate in education reform in Australia. It begins with parents and teachers, and seeks political and policy support for measures which empower grassroots people and drive innovation towards a real education revolution.

Consumer-Centred Health Care

You can participate in reform of our health system. The National Campaign for Consumer-Centred Health Care aims to generate a broad movement for transformational change in health policy towards consumer-centred health care. The Campaign has a focus on the funding and structuring of consumer decision-making, empowerment, self-care and self-management.

Creating a Voice for the 2.4 million Self-Employed Australians and Small Businesses

You can participate in creating a voice and representation for the 2.4 million self-employed Australians and small businesses. Based on these figures, the most prominent and most powerful economic voice in Australia should be self-employed people and small businesses. In fact, the voices of self-employed people and those they employ are rarely heard in government, public policy or the media.

There is no cost to participate

There is no cost to register your participation. We welcome people from all backgrounds and political parties, and those who are not members of any, who support the objectives of the Centre.

When you fill in the form below, select the name of your electorate from the drop-down menu.

In each electorate we appoint Convenors. When you fill in the form, consider offering to act as a Convenor in your electorate. This will involve working with others in your electorate to communicate to your community and your MPs that empowering ordinary people in local communities is good news, good policy, and good politics.

Volunteer with the Centre

When you fill in the form below to register your participation with the Centre, consider volunteering through one of the three volunteer positions available. It doesn't matter where you live, so long as you have internet access.
